"War on Terror" mars spirit of Easter

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usThe traditional White House Easter-egg roll was all but ruined this year because of the hard-line stance taken by the Bush administration in its eternal "Global war-on-terror". Several parents, alarmed by the unexpected bellicosity of the guards, hurried their children back out beyond the security perimeter and onto Pennsylvania Avenue before the event began. "I don't know what they were thinking," said one mother who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usA hush fell over the visitors as they knelt on the White House lawn during opening remarks delivered by an official whom Mrs. Bush introduced as "The Maximum Leader". To some, it seemed unduly threatening and not in the spirit of the holiest of Christian holidays. That was when the exodus began.

Shortly after the egg roll got under way, the event was invaded by human rights activists demonstrating nearby against the use of cluster-bombs.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usAnti-war and human rights activists are planning an unusual take on the Easter egg hunt Monday in Washington. This one is an Easter cluster-bomb hunt.

Fake cluster bombs made by children will be scattered around Lafayette Park, north of the White House. The hunt will take place as hundreds of people are attending the White House Easter Egg Roll on the other side of the executive mansion.

Brian Hennessey is from the Vineeta Foundation, a group that is one of the sponsors. He says the event is supposed to be humorous and organizers want kids to have fun.

Fun or not, the sudden appearance of droves of human rights activists and their children ruined what was left of the spirit of Easter for the traditionalists on the White House lawn. Most broke out of the cordon of reporters and photographers lining the fences and headed home, apparently disgusted at yet another in a string of debacles of the Bush administration.
